Leonor Alvim
Sophisticated textile art made out of rich fabrics, or, as Leonor Alvim calls them, fabric collages, are a rather unusual visual language in the context of the Portuguese arts or, for that matter, in the international arts panorama in general.
Portuguese by birth, Leonor Alvim graduated as a pianist from the Oporto Conservatory of Music, but quickly developed a taste for the Visual Arts, thus continuing her education at A.R.C.O (Center for the Arts and Communication, Lisbon). Between 1975 and 1989 she lived in Brazil where she pursued her interests in the arts, combining her collages with piano concerts and many live performances. She continuously pursued advanced studies in musical form and technique whilst in South America, having been a lecturer and co-founder of various musical groups. Intense, feisty, bubbling with life, she is a force of nature who has been able to embrace the elements that surrounded her in her youth – the Atlantic ocean, the trees in the Douro Valley, the full moon Summer nights, the introspective charm of her beloved Oporto – with the musical, sunny holistic spirituality that is so much part of Brazilian culture. The integration of all these elements throughout a lifetime originated in beautiful fabric collages developed around a theme (Sun, Moon & Stars, Seasons, and Geishas among others). Abstract, musical, lyrical, energetic, her works are the mirror of a woman who lives for her family and art and is represented in private and public collections, both nationally and internationally.
Technique: a feast of combined fabrics, rich in texture and colour, over a support, more neutral fabric, meticulously hand-sewn and stretched over a canvas. Average size is 170 x 140 cm.
